Discover Cambodia's countryside by bike or scooter
During your visit to Battambang you will experience Cambodian life outside the city. There are a number of nice sights in Battambang that are definitely worth a visit! Probably not your highlights of your trip through Cambodia, but definitely recommended to get a more complete experience of the country. Rent a scooter, bicycle or arrange a Tuktuk driver with whom you can easily visit all the sights in one day. This makes two nights in Battambang more than enough.
Sights in Battambang
-
Take a ride on the bamboo train: a unique experience where you drive quite fast on a single railway line through the countryside. on these platformst used to transport bamboo.
-
Discover the Killing Caves: a very violent but historic place where many Cambodians were murdered during the Khmer Rouge regime and dumped in the caves. We skipped this place because we found our visit to the S21 prison and the Killing Fields in Phnom Penh very intense.
-
Explore various temples and pagodas: such as Wat Banan, Wat Ek Phnom (pictured above) and Samrong Knong Pagoda.
-
Visit the Bat Cave: enjoy a Cambodian beer around sunset as swarms of bats fly out of the cave. A very magical sight!
An impression of my experiences in Battambang
After lunch we rented a scooter and went to theWhat Banana Temple ridden (see photo below). This was a long drive, but this road was quite good and the traffic is calm. We had to climb quite a few stairs to visit the temple, so our workout was over. A beautiful, but small temple complex with a great view! Then drove to the Bad Cave. Google Maps sent us on a real rural road where there are hardly any tourists (a little less pleasant with rain, but everything went well!). All locals greeted us and waved. We were kind of an attraction to watch. So we also saw the non-touristy Cambodia. We did see that it is really very poor and that people in the countryside live primitively in huts. Once we arrived at the Bad Caves, sit on a chair and wait with a beer until about 6 p.m. Then swarms of bats come out of the cave. Really a lot! Very nice to see. After the night bus and this adventurous day, it is wonderful time to sleep on time!
